The Hibernian Development Squad progressed into the semi-finals of the SPFL Reserve Cup following an impressive display against Dundee United at Whitton Park.
After signing a new deal with the club last week, Ryan Shanley inspired the squad to victory with a hat-trick against the hosts.
Dino Leddie and Josh Campbell also got in on the act with impressive finishes inside the area.
It was the young Hibees who struck first in Dundee.
A free-kick along the left was played short to Jayden Fairley, who found Leddie at the far post. He brought the ball down to take it past Donaldson and tap Hibernian’s first of the game into the net after 20 minutes.
It only took three minutes more for the Development Squad to double their lead. Josh Doig sent the ball up the park to find Shanley, who battled off United’s backline before slotting in a second of the afternoon.
A third goal came in the space of six minutes, but it was this time from the hosts. A corner sent in from the right was headed home by Adam Hutchison into the bottom left corner to pull one back.
Into the second half and the hosts levelled the account after 52 minutes. Lewis Fraser’s ball sent inside the area was met by the head of Archie Meekison.
However, Lee Makel’s side continued to dominate in the opposition’s half and regained the lead six minutes later. An excellent ball from Innes Murray found Campbell, who met it with a thundering header past substitute goalkeeper Fraser Currid.
From there, Hibernian continued to control the game and were rewarded for their efforts as a fourth of the afternoon came at the 76-minute mark. Doig again fired the ball upfield to Shanley, who controlled it along the right before tucking it into the near corner.
A minute later and the hat-trick was complete for Shanley. Another excellent ball by Murray found Shanley along the left who made no mistake sticking it past the ‘keeper towards the far side of goal.
The Development Squad will travel to face Celtic in the semi-finals on Monday 24 February.
