The Hibernian Development Squad turned in a dominant performance at the Hibernian Training Centre with a 7-1 win over Huddersfield Town’s Reserves.
Jamie Gullan impressed with a hat-trick inside the opening 18 minutes before adding a fourth to his tally in the second half.
Yrick Gallantes netted twice with substitute Steven Bradley rounding off the rout late in the second half.
With a few members of the first-team squad looking to work their way back to full fitness after injury lay-offs, Lee Makel was able to call on some real experience to complement our youngsters.
Adam Bogdan started in goal, with Tom James, Darren McGregor and club captain David Gray making up a solid backline.
Melker Hallberg was a presence in the midfield, helping to support the attacking runs made by Innes Murray and Fraser Murray.
The young Hibees took the game to the Terriers from the first whistle.
Innes Murray played in Gullan along the right, who finished well into the far corner after eight minutes.
Four minutes later and the Development Squad doubled their lead.
Gullan capitalised on an error from Huddersfield as he broke through along the right and sent the defender the wrong way before slotting an impressive finish into the far corner.
It only took 18 minutes for Gullan to complete his hat-trick. Fraser Murray won the ball back and squared it to Gullan, who finished well past Huddersfield’s Chapman.
Closing in on half time, Hibernian added their fourth of the match.
An impressive run from Callum Yeats forced Chapman into a save at the near post. Gullan turned in a rebound, which deflected in off Gallantes, who was credited with the goal.
The visitors pulled one back after the break, with Jahem Healey able to get a shot away and leave Bogdan with little chance.
However, it only took five minutes for Makel’s team to add another goal to their tally for the afternoon.
Fraser Murray broke down the left and played it to Gallantes, who struck first time to get his second of the day.
Arguably the pick of the bunch came in the 67th minute. Fraser Murray flicked the ball through to Gullan with a backheel and the forward unleashed a great strike past Chapman from the edge of the area.
The final goal of the afternoon came when Gullan’s shot from the left side of goal was blocked, with Bradley latching on to the rebound with a low strike into the bottom right corner.
The win gives the Development Squad great momentum heading into Monday’s SPFL Reserve Cup semi-final against Celtic, which is a 2pm kick-off at Lennoxtown.
