Kevin McBride followed John Hughes on the road from Falkirk to Easter Road, and like his manager made it clear from the start that he felt it was the biggest and most important move of his career. Almost from day one Kevin has set out to prove that point by being one of the most hard-working and consistent players in what has been a very impressive start to the season by the entire squad.
McBride has had a varied career, making his mark in a good Motherwell side before injury soured his time at Fir Park. By his own admission Kevin admitted that things did not go as well at Falkirk as he might have hoped, but that is now history with the player grasping his new opportunity at Hibernian - and striking up a midfield partnership with Liam Miller, a player he was no stranger to: "I played alongside Liam when we were younger, so we know each other," he told Hibernian TV this week, adding: "It's also good for both of us to know that we have players who are always there to give the ball to, the likes of Derek and Zouma. So we might do a lot of hard work but so long as we are seeing an end result to that we don't mind doing it."
Kevin had to win over the Hibernian support who were prepared to wait and see for themselves how he would settle in the Hibernian side rather than listening to the negative sounds coming from their Falkirk counterparts: "My first few years at Motherwell I thought I did really well but my last year was a struggle coming back from injury - so I was nowhere near the levels I was. At Falkirk I played most games but it is fair to say I was not a fans favourite there! But since coming to Hibernian I've done the same as always, I've just worked very hard and I have good players alongside me and in front of me. I love being at this club and so I'll just keep working and producing my best every week.
"There is a great atmosphere here and I've noticed the difference from pre-season to now, it has improved all the time. There is a real buzz about the place - obviously when you are winning you are going to get that but even in the games we've lost the boys have all stuck together and supported each other."
Hibernian will take on Rangers on Saturday, perhaps their biggest test of the season so far against a side that will be hurting from the European defeat this week. For McBride and his team-mates however all concentration will be on their own game, and they set out along the M8 with a great deal of belief: "You have to set yourself high targets at a club like this, last year Hibernian finished in the top six but we want to improve on that. As Benji said the other day all the teams in this league are similar and it's just a case of who plays well on the day, if we keep doing what we are then we have the strikers who can win us games, but we have to keep it tight elsewhere on the pitch.
"We're doing well but we could be selfish and say we should be further up the league, games like Hamilton were we did not play as we should, Dundee United where we did and perhaps should have had three points. So we are happy to be where we are in the league but you have to keep looking at the teams above you.
"We go to Ibrox with confidence but you know when you go there that chances are Rangers will have most of the possession. It's a case of keeping things tight but we will go and have a go at them, we are certainly not scared of Rangers or Celtic. This game though will be a big test for us to see just how we are progressing, the fact that it's at Ibrox does not really matter. When you are on the pitch you really don't hear what is happening off it, you are concentrating on the game. Anyway we will have our own supporters there and the aim for us is putting on a display for them."
