Hibernian Ladies continued their fantastic start to the new Scottish Women's Premier League season with another resounding victory - this time it was Aberdeen Ladies who were put to the sword as Hibernian triumphed 9-0 at the Hibernian Training Centre to lead the way at the top of the table, albeit on goal difference from Celtic, Spartans and Glasgow City.
The girls returned from the international break looking to build on their 19-0 victory over Kilmarnock Ladies in their last fixture and Coach Willie Kirk made six changes to his side, including first starts for teenagers Stef Malcolm and Claire Emslie. Despite the number of changes to the team, there was no disruption to the form of the free scoring Edinburgh side and it didn't take them long to break down the Aberdeen defence. The opening goal of the game arrived on 10 minutes when Hayley Cunningham played a neat one-two with Claire Emslie before finding the bottom corner of the Aberdeen net from the edge of the penalty area. Hibernian quickly doubled their advantage when a mis-hit corner kick worked in their favour as Rebecca Zoltie controlled the ball on her chest before firing beyond the despairing goalkeeper from the edge of the box.
Aberdeen had no answer to a rampant Hibernian side and Debbie McWhinnie made the points secure after just 24 minutes of play when she coolly lobbed the goalkeeper after being put through on goal. The visitors were being caught out time and again with a ball in behind their defence and had it not been for some excellent goalkeeping they could have found themselves on the end of a very embarrassing score line. Hibernian made it 4-0 shortly before the half time interval when Hollie Thomson raced onto a through ball from Debbie McWhinnie before calmly rounding the goalkeeper and rolling the ball into the unguarded net. Into the second half and striker Debbie McWhinnie sealed her second hat-trick in as many games with a quire fire double to catch Aberdeen cold and both goals were clinical finishing of the highest standard.
Now leading 6-0, Hibernian made a host of changes for the final 30 minutes with Ellen Pia, Kirsty McBride, Frankie Brown, Joelle Murray and Lisa Robertson replacing Rebecca Zoltie, Debbie McWhinnie, Suzy Robertson, Claire Emslie and Hollie Thomson. Any relief the Aberdeen defence felt at the sight of Debbie McWhinnie leaving the field was quickly forgotten about as Scotland international Kirsty McBride grabbed a hat-trick of her own inside 8 minutes!
McBride's first goal was a stunning 35-yard effort that gave the goalkeeper no chance whilst her second was similar but from just outside of the penalty area. The hat-trick was completed when she drilled the ball into the net following good link-up play from Frankie Brown and Ellen Pia. In the closing stages the Aberdeen goalkeeper twice denied Laura Kennedy from getting her name on the score-sheet with a couple of outstanding saves. Willie Kirk's side have now taken nine points from their opening three fixtures, scoring an incredible 31 goals and have yet to concede. That record will come under threat this weekend when Hibernian face an in-form Celtic Ladies who have already knocked Glasgow City out of the Premier League Cup just last month.
There was further good news for the club as Hibernian Ladies 2000 comfortably moved into the Quarter Finals of the SWFL League Cup with a 4-1 victory away to Dundee City. Hibernian, who had been struggling to raise a team for the match due to injury, holidays and illness, proved too hot to handle as they swept away their hosts in a fantastic display. The youngsters made the early breakthrough when Kirsty Smith delivered a powerful low driven cross into the middle of the 6-yard box and this was deflected into the Dundee City net for an own goal. The home side had been intent on catching Hibernian offside by playing a high line but time after time the Edinburgh girls broke free and would have increased their lead had it not been for some frantic last-gasp clearances.
It wasn't long before Hibernian increased their lead and again it was from a delivery by Kirsty Smith. This time her cross was volleyed into the Dundee City net by Julie Paton after she had came in on the blindside of a defender to diverted the ball beyond the goalkeeper. Shortly before half time Hibernian made it 3-0 when Mariel Kaney picked out Bryony Ross with a cross field pass and the youngster made no mistake as she struck a diagonal shot beyond the goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net. Dundee City pulled a goal back early into the second half when they pounced on slack defending to reduce the deficit but on 70 minutes Hibernian put the game beyond the hosts. Coral Cassidy played an outstanding ball from deep over the Dundee City defence and Kirsty Smith ran onto it before claiming her second goal of the afternoon.
After the match coach Brian Ross commented: "After a solid first half performance where the youngsters did really well to create a three goal advantage, they allowed themselves to lose a bit of focus and they took their foot off the gas. This allowed Dundee City to get back into the game when yet again they should have pressed home this advantage to put the game beyond them much earlier in the second half. Despite this they deservedly earned themselves a place in the Quarter Finals of competition."
