The demolition of the old East Stand Terraces may have marked the end of a era for Hibernian Football Club, but just two months down the line progress continues at a fast pace with steelwork arriving early May. As the Hibernian Community looks ahead to a new chapter in the Club's history following the completion of the new East Stand early September, we take a look back on progress to date.
Building Work Diary
3 March: The East Stand demolition got underway this week with final site clearance taking place, seats removed and floodlights taken down by the building contractor. Work on the site began early Monday morning just 48 hours after Hibernian supporters sitting in the East Terraces bid an emotional and final farewell to the old stand.
5 March: Within just five days of the contractor being on site, the view of the old East Terraces has changed considerably. In what is a huge project involving various separate tasks and stages - work undertaken in week one has included the final clearance of the site pre demolition, all four floodlight columns being taken down, seats removed and three quarters of the East Stand roof being demolished. Work will continue into next week to flatten the site. During the demolition process as many materials as possible will be recycled.
9 March: Week two of the new East Stand building project gave way to the complete demolition of the old East Terrace as we knew it. A webcam has been installed in the West Stand to record the entire process - East Stand webpage updated every day or so with the latest webcam image.
19 March: One interesting item unearthed as the concrete was ripped back from the old terrace was a bottle of Sanderson's Brewed Ginger Beer from the Criterion Works, Edinburgh. It's amazing that the bottle was still intact having been buried deep down under the feet of thousands of supporters for years.
29 March: Over the past two weeks work on the new East Stand building project has continued at full speed and given way to yet another stage which involves all concrete from the site including the old terraces and steps being crushed. This recycled material will form the base layer of the stand now that the site has been leveled, ensuring that the new East Stand grows out of the old!
16 April: Thanks to the recent spell of good weather work has progressed well with piling now complete a few days ahead of schedule. Pile caps have been cut and the area is now being prepared for concrete foundations in advance of the steelwork arriving at the beginning of next month. Thanks to this steady progress on the site over the past several weeks the Contractor remains on target to have the new stand in place and occupied for the early part of the season.
Garry O'Hagan Director and Club Secretary said: "Work continues on the East Stand with piling now complete and foundation work continuing. Steelwork will start to arrive early next week and will be almost immediately followed by the pre-cast concrete of the new seating deck.
"With our last home SPL game of the season taking place tomorrow the structure will begin to grow out the ground over the summer months - as this takes shape we will continue to release regular images as the Club gets the stadium ready for Season 2010/11".
Supporters can access to exclusive webcam images of how work is developing by clicking here. The East Stand web page will be refreshed every day or so with the latest image of the development.
Once completed, the new East Stand will house 6,400 supporters, increasing the capacity of Easter Road Stadium to 20,250 seats. Construction of the new stand will not be completed until after the start of next season with the contractor endeavoring to make part of the seating deck available for matches before then.
