John Hughes believes Hibernian can turn their Europa League third qualifying round tie around against NK Maribor in next week's return leg at Easter Road( for ticket info on the home leg on Thursday 5 August please click here) and praised the support shown by the fans in Slovenia on Thursday night.

The Hibernian manager watched his side endure a 3-0 defeat at Maribor, but Hughes says his team are capable of scoring goals and resurrecting their European dream on home soil.

Hughes said: "Have we given ourselves too much to do in the second leg? Certainly not and I've seen results like this turned around before and I've got players who can score lots of goals.

"I would like to think we could score an early goal in the return match and then it would be interesting to see Maribor's reaction.

"I thought that they were quicker and sharper than we were. I felt they passed the ball with purpose and it maybe showed a little bit that they have played four competitive games so far this season.

"I can't be too hard on the players because they have given everything they've got and tried to do it right. It just wasn't to be and that is disappointing.

"I felt that our ball retention was good, but it was too slow and we played too much in our own half. We were reluctant to play forward passes and when we did there were one or two careless passes which then resulted in their second and third goals.

"So that was disappointing and I felt we shot ourselves in the foot.

"I was very grateful to the Hibs supporters who came over and I'm hoping that the players appreciate that level of support. It is a wonderful club and the fans are desperate for success."
