Hibernian Ladies remain undefeated and joint-top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League following their 2-1 win over Rangers at Albyn Park, writes Richard Payne.
Under the watchful eye of Scotland boss Anna Signeul, second half goals from Lucy Graham and Joelle Murray ensured the Hibees took maximum points after an Emma Brownlie own goal had given the visitors the lead.
Hibs started purposefully however Rangers struck the woodwork early on when Sarah Clelland let fly with a vicious strike that beat Jenna Fife only to crash back off the post.
The visitors suffered a double blow only moments apart when Kirsty Howat and Megan Karagiozis suffered serious looking injuries and had to be stretchered from the field.
Ten minutes from half-time and Hibs pressure almost paid off when Abbi Harrison lobbed Johnstone in the Rangers goal only for Megan Foley to hook it off the line.
Four minutes later and the visitors were ahead after the unfortunate Brownlie headed into her own net following a free kick delivery aimed for Hayley Sinclair.
It only took Hibs until the 54th minute to haul themselves level as Graham volleyed in after neat play by Kirsty Smith down the left.
Chris Roberts’ side were well on top now and went close to scoring again when Brownlie clipped the bar and Chloe Arthur struck the post with a shot from distance.
Hibs were not to be denied and moved ahead in the 62nd minute when Murray rose highest to head home from a corner kick.
Manager Roberts was delighted, saying: “It was a really professional performance and I felt we were in control for the entire 90 minutes.
“Rangers were well-organised and scored a goal against the run of play, but we were always in command, had a lot of pressure and created lots of chances.
“The girls’ confidence is growing every week and that adds pressure because we are going into almost every game now as favourites.
“They’re really enjoying their football just now and if they could play every couple of days I’m sure they would.
“We wish the Rangers’ girls that were injured all the best and a speedy recovery.”
