Hibernian came from two goals down to draw their second game of pre-season as Lewis Stevenson was honoured for his service at the club.
Sunderland had raced to a two goal lead early in the second half, but goals from Martin Boyle and Simon Murray hauled Hibs level.
It was a quiet opening half typical of this stage of pre-season, with players building up their fitness and match sharpness.
Sunderland almost opened the scoring in the fifth minute. A free-kick was awarded at the edge of the area after a foul by Stevenson, and the strike from Khazri deflected off the bar.
The crowd rose to their feet on the sixth minute to pay tribute to Bradley Lowery, the young Sunderland fan who sadly passed away on Friday following a prolonged battle with cancer.
Hibernian chances came from long range efforts. Dylan McGeouch and John McGinn both tried their luck from distance, before a Danny Swanson cross almost evaded Mannone in the Sunderland goal.
At the other end Khazri caused trouble down the left before his cross was cleared by Marvin Bartley, and Marciano had to look sharp to deny Maja.
Sunderland took the lead shortly before half time. Jones clipped the ball across the goal for Khazri to convert.
Martin Boyle came close to equalising just before the interval, his strike from outside the box stinging the palms of Mannone.
Sunderland changed their full side at the interval but the substitutions didn’t appear to affect their flow of play.
Lens doubled the lead for the Mackems, arrowing a strike into the bottom corner beyond Marciano, before Gooch rattled the bar as Sunderland threatened to put the game away.
Hibs regained their composure though, and the ever-threatening Boyle reduced the deficit after squeezing a shot in at the near post.
The side were visibly lifted by the goal, and drew level after 73 minutes. A fantastic crossball from McGinn was met by an equally impressive touch from David Gray. He fired the ball across the six yard box for Simon Murray to tap home.
The game threatened to boil over minutes later – a rash challenge by Cattermole on Bartley sparked a small melee, but the referee managed to regain control.
Hibs almost took the lead with a carbon copy of the second, this time Boyle found space on the right before driving across goal. On this occasion the Sunderland defender managed a foot to clear ahead of Graham.
Substitute Oli Shaw was then denied a second goal of pre-season, his shot rattling off the post and bar before bouncing clear of the goal-line.
Lewis Stevenson was subbed off in the dying minutes to a standing ovation, as the customary man-of-the-match award was announced over the tannoy.
