Grant Murray says that it was disappointing to lose out in the first of a double-header of derbies in the newly rebranded SPFL Reserve set-up.
Hearts emerged 2-1 winners in a fierce encounter at Oriam in the opening game of the SPFL Reserve Cup Group Stage, with both sides reduced to ten men.
The Assistant Coach, who also manages the Hibernian Development Squad, saw both the positives and the negatives from the performance, with him ruing the errors in the build-up to Hearts’ goals.
He said: “It’s disappointing losing a derby. They are big games of football at all levels, whether it is first team, reserves, or youth levels, they’re the ones that you look forward to and the ones that the lads want to win.
“Throughout the game we had spells where we coped fine and we had spells created chances. Obviously, I am disappointed that we lost the two goals. They were mistakes that crept into the game for us.
“We had got ourselves into a good position with the equaliser. It was a good goal, a great ball in from Kane and a good header and it is great to see the midfielder getting into the box.
“I felt we had the upperhand in the game, having the extra man as well, finished the half strongly, but I felt we were different in the second half. Hearts had changed a little bit and sat in a wee bit, and it was up to us to break them down.
“We lost that second goal and then lost a man too, which made it difficult for us.”
On Monday 24 September, Hibernian will again host Hearts at Oriam, this time in the SPFL Reserve League.
Grant is looking for his side to respond in a positive manner and feels that there is not any better game to go into looking to get back on track than a derby.
The Assistant Coach commented: “It’s a league game next against Hearts next. We don’t want to lose any games of football. It’s going to happen, but we have got to bounce back.
“It’s another derby and it’s the best game to go back into.”
Hibs TV also caught up with left-back Sean Mackie, who discussed the game at Oriam, adapting to a new position, and the next SPFL Reserve League match. A full match replay is also available to watch on Hibs TV.
