Hibernian’s Under-18s held their nerve to book a place in the Scottish FA Youth Cup Fifth Round.
The gutsy win over Heart of Midlothian on the indoor Oriam pitch was no more than a young line-up deserved.
There was little between the sides in a fiercely contested first half, though the hosts did strike the bar with an Aaron Hickey effort and tested Hibs keeper Jay Cantley with a Chris Hamilton header.
That save proved decisive as Hibs surged in front, with Ryan Shanley keeping his cool from the penalty spot seconds from the interval after a foul on Josh O’Connor.
Jambos shot-stopper Harry Stoke dived the right way but was unable to deny Shanley the opener.
Determined not to rest on their slender lead, Hibs upped the ante after the break and doubled their advantage through Mackenzie Weir’s powerful header.
There was a test of their resilience when Hearts refused the deficit with 18 minutes left on the clock.
It was Hearts’ turn from the spot, with Dean Ritchie clinical.
Ritchie then had the chance to level when they were awarded another penalty in the dying stages.
Cantley, however, was equal to it and his save helped secure a slot in the next round.
