To coincide with International Women’s Day, Hibernian player Rachael Small is on the cover and is the main player feature in Friday evening’s edition of The Hibee for the game against Rangers.
The midfielder, who can also play in defence, made her comeback to Hibernian’s SWPL team this year after giving birth to her daughter, Amelia Grace Boyle, on Thursday 6 September 2018.
This marks the first time that a female player has been the main feature in the club’s matchday programme, something Rachael is proud of and hopes it acts as encouragement to young supporters attending Easter Road on Friday night.
She said: “I think it is incredible. I didn’t even realise that I was going to be the first to be on the front of the programme – I’m sure Joelle will have something to say about that!
“It’s impressive to be doing this and sharing my story is great. I go along to Easter Road a lot to support Martin and the team, I see so many women and young girls going to the game. If one of the young girls picks up a programme and sees a female on the cover then it will hopefully give them some encouragement to take up the sport.
“It’s great that Hibs are reaching out to the women in the fan base and spreading the equality across the board and giving the women’s team a lot of coverage. It’s a really nice moment to be the first woman on the front of the programme.”
PR & Media Executive John Stephens, who oversees production of the matchday programme, also commented: “Having one of the players from the women’s team at Hibernian on the cover of the matchday programme is a great moment and I am delighted that Rachael is that player.
“Her story is one of perseverance and determination, which are good characteristics for young people, irrespective of gender, to look up to and learn from. It’s a great story too.
“Hibernian were founded on the basis of equality and inclusiveness, everyone at the club is still proud to champion those today. Rachael being on the cover hopefully demonstrates that.”
We would like to place on record our thanks to everyone involved with the SWPL team and Craig Doyle for supplying images of Rachael, including the cover image.
