The Hibernian Development Squad ran out 7-0 winners against Queen of the South Reserves in the SPFL Reserve League on Monday afternoon at Oriam.
After successive victories over St Johnstone, Aberdeen, Dundee, and St Mirren, the side were aiming for a fifth win in a row at the start of 2019.
That quest got off to a great start as they knocked the ball about comfortably in the opening stages at Oriam and it eventually bore fruit.
A peach of a pass from Oli Shaw curled behind the Queens defence allowing Jamie Gullan to gather. He still had work to do as he evaded two challenges before sending a great finish into the back of the net with 11 minutes gone.
One became two just five minutes later when Gullan’s free-kick delivery found Kevin Waugh at the back post. His initial effort was saved, but his follow up was blasted into the back of the net to extend the lead.
A lengthy wait of 16 minutes elapsed before Hibernian got their third and it was from Waugh again. Gullan picked out the defender at the back post and he was able to side foot the ball into the net unmarked from inside the six yard box.
37 minutes were on the clock and it was 4-0 as Queen of the South struggled to contain the attacking power of Hibernian. Innes Murray’s cross into the box took a nick off Shaw as it ended up in the path of Lewis Allan who knocked it into the net.
Things got even better for Hibernian on the stroke of half-time when Gullan got his second of the game. Ben Stirling played a neat one-two with Allan before drilling the ball across the six yard line and the forward gratefully tapped in from close range.
In the second half, Hibernian turned on the style once again as a further two goals were scored in the rout.
An excellent passing move created the sixth. Maciej Dabrowski started the move with a pass to Waugh and the build-up incorporated Callum Donaldson, Tommy Block, Murray, Kosovar Sadiki, Stirling and Gullan, as the ball moved from 18 yard box to 18 yard box seamlessly. Stirling then sent in a teasing delivery for Shaw, who rose to thump a header into the net before the hour mark.
A little over five minutes later and the scoring was completed by Shaw with a far simpler goal. A Josh Campbell played the ball into his path in the goal and the forward was able to confidently slot the ball through the goalkeeper’s legs to make it 7-0.
The victory moves the side up to third in the table on 23 points for the season – 15 of which have been picked up since the return of the league in January.
They are next in action on Monday 18 March at 2pm when they take on Hamilton Academical at The Hope CBD Stadium.
