Match Report

Following last week’s defeat in an Edinburgh derby, Hibernian Women were looking to bounce back as they met Motherwell at Ainslie Park.

Thanks to goals from Amy Gallacher and Colette Cavanagh, Dean Gibson’s side were able to pick up three very important points as they beat Motherwell 3-2.

Hibernian did not make the best start and faced some early pressure from the get-go. Captain Joelle Murray was forced into making an incredible challenge inside her own area to deny Motherwell’s Callaghan from getting a shot early in the match.

The hosts struggled to create chances early on but did manage to win a freekick on the edge of the Motherwell area in the 24th minute. Colette Cavanagh was played in by Rachael Boyle, however, she was unable to get a clean hit and her shot went wide of the target.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 26th from a set-piece. Motherwell’s Callaghan was able to get on the end of a corner kick and consequently put ball into the back of the net, putting the visitors 1-0 up.

This lead did not last long, however, as Amy Gallacher equalised for the home side only two minutes later. After being played in by a through ball from Boyle, Gallacher rounded the Motherwell keeper and finished from a tight angle, the perfect response from Hibs.

Things got even better for Hibs as they made it 2-1 in the 44th minute. Some great intricate play from Hibs saw Boyle get played in one-on-one with the Motherwell keeper but selflessly squared the ball to Cavanagh for a tap-in. Lovely build-up play from the hosts and a second assist on the day for Boyle.

After taking the lead, Hibs started playing with their tails up as Carla Boyce hit the bar and the side netting within the space of a minute just before half time.

Following an uncertain start, Hibs responded brilliantly with two great goals and went into the interval 2-1 up.

It was the perfect start to the second half for Hibs as they won a freekick on the edge of the Motherwell box that was then was expertly dispatched by Gallacher. Her second and Hibs’ third of the match.

Motherwell tried to put the hosts under pressure as they looked to get back into the match, however, Hibs were able to deal with the press with some excellent passing moves.

Gallacher came within inches of getting her hat trick in the 64th minute, however, her low-driven shot went just wide of the post.

The hosts made their first change of the match in the 65th minute with Kirsty Morrison on for Boyce.

Hibs soon made their second change of the afternoon in the 73rd minute with Eilidh Adams coming on in place of Addie Handley.

A few concerns arose from Hibs as Leah Eddie appeared to pick up a knock in the 83rd minute. Thankfully though, she was able to carry on.

It was not all smooth sailing for Hibs in the second half, however, as Motherwell were able to pull one back and make it 3-2 in the 87th minute.

Despite a scare late on, Hibs were able to hold on to their lead and secure an impressive win at Ainslie Park. Hibs’ focus will now turn to their next match on April 18th where they will face Rangers away from home.
