His players battled back from adversity on a number of occasions and came from behind twice to get off to a winning start in the cinch Premiership.

Our head coach explained was pleased he was with his players’ character and their performance.

“It’s a continuation of what the group showed last season, they finished where they did in the table for a reason because they’re a good side. They’ve got good character and resilience about them.

“I thought they played well. The only criticism at half-time was that we didn’t defend our box well enough on a couple of occasions, so we will look at that.

“But the message at half-time was to keep trusting what they do because they played well first half and continued that for the first 30 minutes of the second half, then we had to be resilient in the latter part.”

His side continue to develop both their technically and mentally and Ross believes that was on show this afternoon.

“The players have got better at dealing with adversity; in Europe after the red card and today after being behind twice. It’s trusting in the process and what they do.

“They’re growing as players all the time. This was not an easy opening fixture, the way Motherwell played was intense, it was physically challenge, so to rise to that after travelling Thursday was brilliant.”
