As Hibs looked for a new main man, they were quick to pounce on serial winner Archibald.

Beating off competition from other clubs, Hibs did everything in their power to make the Scotland international a Hibee.

“Hibernian pushed for me, they were saying all the right things and doing all the right things.

“Hibs have always been a big club with a fantastic history. I remember when my grandad would always talk to me about the Famous Five. It just seemed the right move for me at that time.

“They had players such as John Collins, Paul Kane, Gareth Evans, Gordon Rae, Alan Snedden, and Andy Goram, so there was a fair amount of experience, youth, and quality within the team.

“I would not have gone to Hibs if I did not think they had a team that I could fit into, a team where I could get service, and a team where I could play football.”

After signing for the club, Archibald would go on to spend two years at Hibs, scoring 16 goals in his first season.

When recalling his time in the capital, the Scottish Football Hall of Fame inductee was quick to form a relationship with the supporters.

“I enjoyed my time at Hibs thoroughly, I really did. I started scoring goals right away.

“I think that when a club makes a signing and the fans can see that they are good, trying, and working hard then it is fantastic. The whole thing comes together and then there is a great experience to be had at that club between the fans, club, and players.

“As a striker, if I am scoring goals, then I am having success, which forms a stronger relationship with the fans. Everybody has to search for their own little bit of success in the team. If they can do that then it is a successful team, and that is what teamwork is.

“Everyone has got to look at their own little bit, do their job properly and then you have got a great chance to have success together, and I think the fans see that very clearly. You can never fool the fans EVER.

“My relationship was very good with them, we were scoring goals and playing good football. It was a two-way street I really enjoyed the sensation that comes from the terraces. As a player, you can feel it.”

In November 1988, during his first season at Hibs, Archibald scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory away against Hearts. This led to a memorable and iconic celebration. He recalled that special moment.

“We had gone down to 10 men; Paul Kane had scored our first goal which was a really good back post header. Hearts were pushing, of course, and they were playing at home. Fans were pushing them on, and it was one of those days where it had been raining all day so that was a character test.

“The ball came to Paul Kane and for whatever reason, he did an overhead kick from the centre circle. I think he just did not know what to do, he was surrounded, we were 1-0 up and down to ten men so he just did an overhead kick that came in my direction. I remember Dave McPherson was marking me, but the ball went over him as well, so it was a sort of race in the 88th minute. Rain bucketing down and I was getting a bit tired at that stage. I got there first and I just hit it with everything I had in my body. I think that is why the celebration turned out like it did. I had my arms in the air, but my head was a little bowed because I was absolutely exhausted.

“The fans went berserk because it had been a long time since they had won there. It was great to score that goal in front of them and salute them.

“The goal has lived on from that moment. On social media it is constantly cropping up, they (the supporters) constantly remember it and enjoy it, and to be fair so do I. It is one of my favourite goals.”

Later this month, Archibald will be returning to Easter Road for the first time since 1990.

“I am really looking forward to it now,” smiled the former striker. “Especially as I have not been back to the club since I left. I have been in Edinburgh many times, but it never coincided with games.

“I would imagine there would be a lot of love in the room, certainly from my part. As I say, I had a brilliant time with the fans.

“It is always interesting to know, what the fans want to know. From a player’s point of view, it is always interesting to know what they thought at that time.”

Hibees will be able to ask Steve Archibald all about his career at the event that’ll take place at Wednesday 15 December, 2021 and will start at 8pm.
