Despite controlling the majority of the first half, we could not convert our chances and the home side came out on top.

The result means we drop a place to eighth in the cinch Premiership, with Livingston moving above us into seventh.

As it happened…

David Gray made one change to the side that won at St Mirren last time out.

That change came at wing-back as PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year nominee Josh Doig returned to the starting XI. The 19 year-old came in for Chris Cadden, who limped off in Paisley with a thigh strain.

Both Darren McGregor and Demetri Mitchell returned to training this week and were named on the bench.

For the second week in a row, the Hibees wore their 'Sunshine On Leith’ yellow kit in dreich conditions in Livingston.

Both sides had early sights of goal in the opening quarter of an hour. The first came for the home side - a nice piece of skill on the edge of the box from Pittman allowed the midfielder to find half a yard and get a shot away, but Lewis Stevenson was on hand to block.

Moments later, Nicky Devlin did well to get beyond his man down the right hand side and fire across the face of goal. Fortunately, the ball evaded the outstretched leg of Odin Bailey and we survived an early scare.

Harry Clarke had the first attempt for the Hibees on ten minutes. The defender headed over the top from a Stevenson cross as we began to find our foothold in the game.

Clarke made a very positive start to the game and could have opened the scoring five minutes later. From a Doig cross, the ball broke to the Englishman inside the penalty area; he got it out of his feet and pulled the trigger but fired over.

Elias Melkersen nearly got himself on the end of a Ewan Henderson cross as the Hibees began to up the ante, but Livingston goalkeeper Ivan Konovalov, making his debut for the West Lothian side, got their first.

James Scott was next to try his luck for the Hibees. The striker carried the ball from the halfway line but pulled his left-footed effort just wide of Konovalov’s goal.

The Hibees certainly looked more threatening in the opening half an hour, with both Doig and Clarke causing problems from either flank.

That combination nearly paid dividends on 28 minutes. Clarke put in a teasing ball which was cleverly headed down by Scott into the path of Doig – the teenager's shot was cleared off the line and following some pinball in the Livi area, the hosts eventually cleared.

Jake Doyle-Hayes, Joe Newell, Ewan Henderson and Clark all had efforts off target as the Hibees continued to push for the opener, but in what was very much the story of the first half – we couldn’t work Konovalov in goal.

The Hibees started the second half as they finished the first – on the front foot. Clarke did brilliantly to pick out Scott with a 50 yard diagonal pass, the Hibs striker controlled and got his shot away but it was deflected wide and came to nothing.

Melkersen was shown the first yellow card of the game for a late tackle on Jason Holt as Livi began to fight their way back into affairs.

Newell was inches away from the opener on the hour mark. He unleashed a powerful drive from 25 yards out that whistled just over the bar.

With the first shot on target in the game, Livingston took the lead. Andrew Shinnie cut it back to Pittman who kept his composure and fired into the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area.

The hosts nearly doubled their advantage when Joel Nouble found himself in space on the left hand side of the box, the striker got a powerful shot on goal but Macey did well to block with his feet.

We nearly found our way back into the game when Henderson did brilliantly down the right hand side to pick out Melkersen. At full stretch, the Norwegian teenager made a good connection but his effort was agonisingly wide.

In the final twenty minutes we continued to push for an equaliser – Henderson was next to go close when his header looped over the bar from a Stevenson cross.

Demetri Mitchell made a welcome return to the pitch in the final ten minutes of the tie, making his first appearance for the Club since February.

But it was Livi who threatened in the final few moments as Alan Forrest nearly added a second for David Martindale's side. He twisted and turned on the edge of the box, finding space for a shooting opportunity but Macey tipped his effort round the post.

Three minutes added time were added on by referee, Chris Graham, but we couldn’t find an equaliser as Livingston saw out the game to claim all three points.
