New Academy signing, João Balde was delighted to make his first start for the Hibs Development Squad earlier this week.

João joined in January and made his first appearance for Steve Kean's Development Squad on Tuesday morning in a 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town at HTC, with James Scott grabbing the only goal of the game.

Steve Kean took the Development Team, which included a hybrid of First Team players, U18s and Academy prospects, like João, in the starting XI.

Speaking to hibernianfc.co.uk after the match, João told us how pleased he was with the overall team performance.

“It was a good win given the tough conditions. In the first half it was hard to play out due to the weather, but we were able to hold out until half time, and in the second half it was easier to play with the wind behind us.”

João is currently out on loan at Civil Service Strollers. But the central midfielder has been training and playing with the Development Squad at HTC whilst developing his game in the Lowland League.

João says he has been adapting well to the new experience and is loving every moment.

“I’ve been really enjoying it. Everyone’s been showing me around and making me feel comfortable. It’s hard work due to the intensity, but it’s great to play for the Development Squad as it is a fantastic opportunity for me.

“I just have to keep working hard and hopefully I’ll get my chance in the First Team.”
