A late penalty from Jamie McGrath condemned the Hibees to defeat at Tannadice.

When speaking after the game, Johnson gave his thoughts on what went wrong.

“First and foremost, I’m disappointed with the result. We felt that we performed better technically today than we did against Motherwell.

“In the first half, we had good control and a couple of chances early on but didn’t infiltrate them enough or get enough bodies in the box.

“Their goal, which was poor defensively from us, gave them something to hang on to and meant that we had the overload when we didn’t really want it.

“We should’ve played forward earlier and quicker, which is why I brought Myko on to go two up top. He did brilliantly to get us a goal back and it looked like only one team was trying to win it.

“A couple of mistakes, one in the breakaway which led to their thrown-in and the challenge for the penalty, cost us the game.

“The big moment was just before that with Elie’s opportunity that went wide, and these are the moments that matter in big games. It’s bitterly disappointing because it’s another opportunity lost.”

There are now two games until the split and the Hibees’ next opponent is Hearts at Easter Road.

“We’ve got two cup finals now to secure a top six place and then we still want to compete in Europe.

“We’ve missed two big opportunities to get points and the players have got to individually get it right, I’ve got to set them up right – which we did today – and then it’s about bringing their best when it matters the most, and that matters now.”
