Elie Youan and Martin Boyle were on the scoresheet in Switzerland, a result that meant the Hibees won 5-3 on aggregate and are now just one round away from the group stages of the competition.
When speaking after the game to Hibs TV, Johnson was full of praise for his players.
“I’m super proud. I’m proud of everyone; the board, the fans, the staff, the players – everyone has worked ever so hard. The players were absolute trojans.
“This was a stretch game for us against a quality side. The boys worked so hard, they had to double up, run forward, run back, and create angles. We asked them to try and play more in the second half and I think we did that, particularly when we had to see the game out there were some really nice passages of play.
“There were some warrior type performances, and the fans massively played their part. It shows that we’re building something here.
“Everyone’s frustrated by our league start, and we are, but this is a sign that we can compete at this level. We’re pushing the Club forward.”
There were just under 1,000 Hibernian FC supporters at the Swissporarena this evening and they added to what was a ferocious atmosphere.
“The atmosphere was great in a big European tie, which was aided by our magnificent supporters. They were superb and make such a difference. We’re so grateful for everyone that travelled, we know it’s not cheap, so we’re happy they’ve had a good day and a good night as well.
“We’re extremely proud, and now bring on Aston Villa.”
Supporters can watch the full interview on Hibs TV later as Johnson discusses the game plan, Sunday’s match against Raith Rovers, and Dylan Levitt.
