In what is our only home pre-season friendly, the Hibees will take on the Dutch side on Friday 21 July in a 7.15pm kick-off.
As part of their benefits package, all Season Ticket Holders will be able to attend the game for free. Further information on this and prices for supporters who don’t have this advantage will be revealed in due course.
There has been a strong connection between the two clubs over the last 20 years with both Hibs and Groningen fans regularly going to visit/attend each other’s games. In particular, a large contingent of Dutch supporters regularly watch the Hibees and visit Easter Road.
FC Groningen were relegated from the Eredivisie last season, so will be preparing for the Eerste Divisie – the second-tier of Dutch football – for the first time in 23 years. The Club, however, has a strong history of bringing through top talent, including the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Arjen Robben.
This is the fifth and final pre-season friendly that will be confirmed for the summer.
Hibernian FC Chief Executive Ben Kensell commented: “With the planned friendly against Watford now taking place next summer, we were keen to organise a high-quality match to aid preparations ahead of the new campaign.
“We reached out to FC Groningen understanding the pre-existing relationship between the two clubs and both sets of supporters. We hope to see as many people at Easter Road for the game as possible.”
