With one month to go until our historic 150th Anniversary fixture with Rot-Weiss Essen, we took a closer look at our German counterparts!
Fixture Information
As part of our 150th Anniversary celebrations, the Club will host German-side Rot-Weiss Essen at Easter Road – as we celebrate a historic fixture in our history and British football history.
The match will take place on Wednesday 9 July, with a 7pm kick-off at Easter Road Stadium.
This will be the first time that Rot-Weiss Essen have returned to Easter Road since the two teams played each other in 1955. The Hibees progressed over two legs in the inaugural European Cup, with Hibs reaching the Semi-Finals of the competition and becoming the first-ever British team to play in Europe.

A Closer Look At Rot-Weiss Essen
Much like Hibs, many of Rot-Weiss Essen’s glory years were in the late 1940s and early 1950s – when they won the German Cup for the first time in 1953 before being crowned German Champions in 1955 – arguably the club’s greatest historical success. That granted them passage into the European Cup, where they met Hibs and became the first German team to compete in Europe.
The German Bundesliga was created in 1963, however, Essen didn’t earn qualification to the top flight until 1966, where they yo-yoed from the top two tiers for the next decade.
Between the late 70s and 2000s the German side slowly declined amid financial problems, which saw them drop as low as the fifth tier of German football when the club filed for insolvency in 2010.
The Club bounced back to the fourth-tier the following season before earning promotion into 3. Liga in 2022 – returning to the third tier of German football for the first time in 14 years.
Now managed by Uwe Koschinat – Rot-Weiss Essen finished eighth place in their 2024/25 campaign but won the Lower Rhine Cup – beating MSV Duisburg 2-1 in the final at the end of May.
