Versatile midfielder. Scotland Under-21 international. Experienced in the topflight. We took a look back at new Hibernian recruit Josh Mulligan’s promising career so far.
The 22-year-old has penned a four-year contract with the Club following the expiration of his contract at fellow William Hill Premiership side Dundee.
A Dundee native, Mulligan progressed through his local club’s youth academy to become a regular first team starter at Dens Park.
The defensive midfielder, who can also play right wing-back, was handed his senior debut at Dundee by interim boss James McPake in the final game of the 2018/19 season; coming on as a substitute against St Mirren.

Mulligan made eight league appearances and picked up a Scottish League Two winners’ medal during a short loan stint with Cove Rangers, which was curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
A season-long injury ruled the midfielder out for the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign, but Mulligan bounced back stronger and had an impressive start to the 2021/22 campaign with Scottish League one club Peterhead.
A return to Dens Park occurred quicker than expected, with Mulligan recalled early to Dundee following his eye-catching performances at Balmoor Stadium in January 2022.
With the Dark Blues participating in the 2022/23 Scottish Championship, Mulligan would excel in both midfield and defence as Dundee surged to the title. Playing 42 times across all competitions, Mulligan played an integral role in his side’s return to the topflight.

After signing a two-year deal in June 2023, Mulligan enjoyed a solid first season in the Premiership – helping his side to a Top Six finish – before kicking on even further in the 2024/25 campaign despite Dundee’s dip in league position.
Mulligan would impress in a number of positions during his 41 appearances across last season, earning him plenty of interest from clubs across Scotland and England.
This interest was sparked not just by Mulligan’s club form. The versatile midfielder has been a regular in the Scotland Under-21s squad, scoring twice in 16 appearances.
His U21s debut came against Belgium in June 2022, and it did not take long for Mulligan to snatch his first goal at this level. He scored for the first time in a 3-1 victory over Northern Ireland in September 2022 with a strong back-post strike.
Mulligan scored his second U21 goal during UEFA Under-21 European Championship qualification in a 5-0 victory over Malta after finding himself in the right place at the right time to fire in a powerful low strike.

Mulligan’s next step of his blossoming career sees him switch Dens Park for Easter Road, joining up with his new teammates ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
