Bio

Within one season in Leith after a cross-city move from Hearts, Kathleen McGovern has rapidly become a Hibs Women icon.

McGovern started her football career with Celtic and spent 11 years with the Glasgow club, progressing through the youth ranks before breaking into the first team.

The striker lifted the SWPL Cup with Celtic in 2021 before her surprising departure soon after led to a spell at German club SC Sand, which preceded a season-long stint at Hearts for the 2023/24 campaign.

She played a massive part in the Oriam outfit reaching the Scottish Cup final in 2024 – scoring at Hampden Park versus Spartans in the semi-final.

Grant Scott moved quickly to bring McGovern to Meadowbank Stadium ahead of the 2024/25 season – a free transfer that will go down in Hibs folklore.

She won an unprecedented three Player of the Month awards during the 2024/25 campaign, while also securing our Goal of the Season award and netting four hat-tricks.

All in all, ‘McGov’ scored 31 times in 33 appearances, of which only 25 were starts as Hibs charged towards the Scottish Women’s Premier League title.

This incredible feat included scoring seven vital goals in our final six games, while also providing the assist for Linzi Taylor’s league-clinching finish.

McGovern has featured across a number of youth levels for Scotland, making over 10 appearances for her country at Under-17 level and has scored three goals - not including a penalty shoot-out strike - in five Under-23 level games.

Following her incredible 2024/25 campaign, McGovern was called up to the Scotland ‘A’ Squad for the first time. She started on her debut versus Austria at Hampden Park on 30 May 2025.

Her first senior international goal came just days later, on 3 June 2025, versus former FIFA World Cup finalists, the Netherlands. McGovern prodded in a 27th minute equaliser to earn Scotland an impressive draw in Tilburg.

Before her exploits in the senior team, McGovern had featured across a number of youth levels for Scotland – making over 10 appearances for her country at Under-17 level and scoring three goals in five Under-23 level games.
